EMDR is a new talk-therapy practice on the block. It is a new flavor of talk-therapy. During an EMDR session you speak with your therapist about particularly traumatic events and then, when you or your therapist sense that you are feeling strong negative emotions (often connected to a traumatic experience), the therapists guides you through a series of desensitization exercises (originally focused exclusively on eye movements left and right but not anymore) that calm your emotional brain down.
EMDR is a science-based therapeutic modality but it is now regulated by an official EMDR body, and so despite its simplicity, only a niche of talk-therapists can practice it. So therapy is not EMDR, but EMDR is a form of talk-therapy.
